Located about 25 miles southwest of Portland, Newberg serves as the northern entry point to Yamhill County wine country. With a population larger than Carlton but smaller than McMinnville, Newberg offers a blend of higher education, suburban development, and agricultural surroundings.

History and Settlement

Newberg was incorporated in 1889 and named after Newberg, Germany. It was originally settled by Quaker families seeking agricultural land and religious community. That Quaker influence shaped much of the town’s early social and civic development.

In 1891, George Fox University was established (originally Pacific Academy). The university remains a significant economic and cultural anchor for the town.

Railroad expansion in the late 19th century supported Newberg’s farming economy. Over the past several decades, its proximity to the Portland metro has led to steady residential growth.
