I hadn't been to the Beaverton Farmers Market in about eight years, and over one recent weekend I made a point of hitting four west-side markets back to back, to see how they compare. If you're weighing which Saturday or Sunday routine fits your new neighborhood, here's what I found.

What's the Beaverton Farmers Market like?

The Beaverton Farmers Market is the biggest of the four we'll cover in this blog, with the widest range of produce, prepared food, and specialty options, though parking requires some patience during peak hours.

This market has grown substantially in the last several years. It now draws between 15,000 and 20,000 visitors on a busy summer Saturday, with a mix of conventional and organic farmers, ranchers, and artisan food producers selling everything from fresh produce to farmstead cheeses and baked goods. I found a strong lineup of plant-based and gluten-free options, along with alcohol-free specialty beverages, which wasn't as common the last time I visited. Live music kept the whole space feeling lively rather than just transactional.

Parking near the library filled up quickly and we ended up walking a few blocks, but with that much to see, it was worth it. The market sits across from the Beaverton City Library on SW Hall Boulevard and has been running since 1988. It's open Saturdays, with winter hours in February and March and a longer summer and fall season from April through November. Service animals are welcome, and pets can come along if carried, in a carrier, or in a stroller or wagon.

Is Cedar Mill Farmers Market worth a stop?

The Cedar Mill Farmers Market is a compact neighborhood market with easy parking, running Saturdays from spring through fall in the Safeway lot at NW Cornell and Murray Roads, and it's the only one of the four of these markets that allows leashed dogs to walk through with you.

The contrast with Beaverton is immediate. Cedar Mill is a fraction of the size. Vendors here cover produce, mushrooms, coffee, and crafts, along with the standard specialty foods you'll find at most Pacific Northwest markets. Live music is part of the regular lineup, and the market posts its musician schedule online if that's part of the draw for you.

Cedar Mill has been running since 1999 and operates Saturdays roughly from May through October. 

What makes the PSU Farmers Market different?

The PSU Farmers Market runs year-round on Saturdays in downtown Portland's South Park Blocks, drawing up to 100 vendor stalls and thousands of shoppers under a canopy of mature trees, with dogs officially restricted due to crowd size.

This is the only market on the list that doesn't take a winter break. The Portland State University campus setting, shaded by park block trees, keeps the market comfortable even on warm days, and the spread-out layout makes it feel less crowded than the vendor count would suggest. It's a strong stop if you want fresh, local food every week of the year rather than just during growing season.

Street parking near campus is limited given the downtown location, but the market sits directly on MAX and Portland Streetcar lines, so transit is a realistic option if you're located nearby. Despite posted signage restricting pets, we saw a fair number of dogs there anyway. Officially, dogs aren't permitted inside the market perimeter except service animals.

What should I know before visiting Hillsdale Farmers Market?

The Hillsdale Farmers Market runs Sundays year-round in the parking lot between Ida B. Wells High School and Rieke Elementary School, with 50-plus vendors and a residential-neighborhood parking situation worth planning around.

Hillsdale rounds out the week nicely if you've already covered the Saturday markets, since it's the Sunday option on this list. It's mid-sized, smaller than Beaverton or PSU but larger than Cedar Mill, with a strong showing of produce, prepared foods, and specialty items like vegan and gluten-free offerings. The market posts its vendor lineup online in advance, which is useful if there's a specific stall you're hoping to catch.

Because the market sits in a residential area rather than a commercial lot, parking is tighter than at the other three. There's a lot at the high school and a nearby orthodontics office lot on Capitol Highway, plus street parking in the surrounding neighborhood, but expect to walk a bit. The market runs weekly from spring through late fall and shifts to an every-other-week schedule in winter.

Finding your own market routine
