McMinnville, Oregon - A Historic County Seat Turned Wine Country Hub

by Amanda Hagen

Located in the heart of Yamhill County, McMinnville is one of the most established and historically significant communities in Oregon wine country. Known for its preserved downtown, access to vineyards, and strong educational presence, McMinnville blends agricultural roots with small-city infrastructure in a way that appeals to both long-time residents and newcomers relocating to the Willamette Valley.

Early Settlement and Development

McMinnville was founded in 1855 and named after McMinnville, Tennessee, the hometown of early settler William T. Newby. Like many towns in the Willamette Valley, its early economy centered on farming and grain production. The arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century accelerated commercial development and positioned McMinnville as a regional trade center.

In 1885, what is now Linfield University was founded (originally as McMinnville College), contributing to the town’s educational and cultural infrastructure. Over time, McMinnville became the county seat of Yamhill County and developed a robust civic identity.

The late 20th century saw the rise of Oregon’s wine industry, and McMinnville emerged as a central location within the Willamette Valley AVA. Today, it is internationally recognized for wine production, tourism, and hospitality.
