Carlton, Oregon - A Small Town with Global Wine Recognition

by Amanda Hagen

With a population under 3,000, Carlton is one of the smallest incorporated cities in Yamhill County — yet it holds an outsized reputation within the Oregon wine industry.

Early History

Carlton was incorporated in 1899 and named after settler James Carlton. Like neighboring towns, it developed around agriculture and benefited from railroad access in the late 19th century.

For much of the 20th century, Carlton remained a quiet farming community. Beginning in the 1990s and early 2000s, the expansion of Oregon’s wine industry transformed its downtown into a concentrated hub of tasting rooms.

What Carlton Is Known For

1. Walkable Wine District
Carlton’s compact downtown includes numerous tasting rooms within a few blocks.

2. Agricultural Surroundings
The town is surrounded by vineyards and farmland, maintaining its rural setting.

3. Small-Town Scale
Carlton has limited commercial development compared to McMinnville or Newberg, preserving a quieter residential atmosphere.

Neighborhood Overview in Carlton

Because of its small size, Carlton does not have large master-planned subdivisions. Residential areas include:

Downtown Residential Core

Small lots with early- to mid-20th-century homes. Highly walkable to tasting rooms and restaurants.

West Carlton

Newer construction homes on slightly larger lots developed in the 2000s.

Rural Outskirts

Properties just outside city limits often include acreage, vineyards, or agricultural zoning.

Housing & Lifestyle

Carlton appeals to buyers seeking a slower pace and proximity to vineyards. Inventory tends to be limited due to the town’s size. Housing includes bungalows, Craftsman-style homes, and newer single-family builds.

Unlike larger towns, Carlton has fewer large retail centers, meaning residents often travel to McMinnville or Newberg for expanded services.
