How I Balance Being a Doula and a Real Estate Agent in the PNW: Supporting Communities Through Major Life Transitions

by Amanda Hagen

If you know me, you know my work is built on one central belief: people deserve care, dignity, and real support during life’s biggest transitions. That belief is what connects my two careers—full-spectrum doula work and real estate in the Pacific Northwest.

They may seem unrelated at first glance, but the truth is: they overlap more than anyone realizes. Both require compassion, advocacy, trauma-informed presence, and a deep commitment to community care. And both fill me in ways I wouldn’t trade for anything.

Why I Work as Both a Doula and a Real Estate Agent

My doula work focuses on underserved and overlooked communities—people who often don’t have access to the care, stability, or support they deserve. I’m present for births, losses, end-of-life transitions, and the complicated spaces in between. These moments expose the realities of inequity: who has housing, who doesn’t, who has resources, who’s navigating it alone.

Real estate, meanwhile, lets me support people through a different kind of major transition. Buying or selling a home isn’t just a transaction—it’s about safety, stability, choice, and building a future. I approach both careers with the same mindset: clear information, compassionate support, and advocacy when it matters most.

Housing as a Human Right: The Core Belief That Connects Everything

The thread that ties both of my worlds together is simple: housing is a human right.
I’ve seen how safe, stable housing changes the trajectory of someone’s life. It affects physical health, mental well-being, financial stability, and family systems.

This belief shows up everywhere in my work:

  • In how I guide clients through home buying and selling

  • In how I support families through vulnerable life events

  • In my commitment to trauma-informed, values-driven service

  • In my volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, where I get to connect both of my roles directly through community-building and housing access

This alignment between my values and my work is intentional. It’s the reason I’m able to pour myself fully into both careers without compromise.

Do I Ever Get Stretched Too Thin? Honestly—No. Here’s Why.

People sometimes ask if doula work takes me away from real estate or if real estate pulls me away from doula clients. The truth: both roles run smoothly because I’ve built systems and support on both sides.

When I’m at a birth:

  • I have a real estate support team ready to handle urgent needs

  • Clients always know what to expect

  • Communication remains clear and consistent

  • Nothing gets dropped or delayed

When I’m on doula call during real estate work:

  • I have reliable backup doulas

  • I structure my schedule responsibly

  • My systems ensure all clients stay supported without interruption

No one gets neglected. No one gets the “lesser version” of me.
Both careers stay organized, ethical, and grounded in communication.

How These Two Careers Fill My Soul

Real estate fulfills my love for homes, architecture, rooting into community, and helping people create stability and growth. It’s practical, empowering, and deeply transformative.

Doula work fulfills my desire to show up for people in their most tender, vulnerable moments. It’s emotional, grounding, and sacred.

Both careers lead back to the same purpose:
supporting people during life’s biggest transitions with clarity, compassion, and care.

Whether you’re welcoming new life, navigating loss, buying your first home, downsizing, relocating, or rebuilding your life—my role is to help you move through that transition feeling supported and informed.
